Sourdough Waffles and Pancakes: A Homesteader’s Delight

As a homesteader, making the most of what we have is key to our way of life. Sourdough waffles and pancakes are a perfect example of this philosophy, as they use up excess sourdough starter that would otherwise go to waste. Plus, they’re delicious!

Sourdough starter is essentially fermented dough that has been kept alive through regular feedings of flour and water. It’s an essential ingredient in many bread recipes but can also be used for other baked goods like waffles and pancakes.

To make sourdough waffles or pancakes, you’ll need active sourdough starter, flour, milk (or another liquid), eggs, baking soda (for waffles), salt, sugar (optional), and butter or oil for cooking.

Begin by measuring out your ingredients. For every cup of flour used in the recipe, you’ll need one cup of active sourdough starter. If your starter needs feeding before using it in the recipe, do so at least 8 hours beforehand.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour with any dry ingredients like salt or sugar. Then add in the milk or other liquid along with the eggs and mix until just combined.

Next comes the star ingredient: sourdough starter! Mix it into the batter thoroughly until smooth. At this point, if you’re making waffles instead of pancakes, add some baking soda to help them rise.

Heat up your waffle iron or skillet on medium-high heat with butter or oil to prevent sticking while cooking. Once hot enough pour about 1/4-1/2 cup portions onto your cooking surface depending on desired size. Cook each side until golden brown; for pancakes flip once bubbles form on top then cook additional few minutes till browned under neath

Serve warm with syrup or fruit topping; enjoy!

One great thing about sourdough waffles and pancakes is that they freeze well. If you have leftovers, just put them in an airtight container or bag and store them in the freezer. They can be reheated in a toaster oven or microwave for a quick breakfast on busy mornings.

Another benefit of using sourdough starter is that it adds flavor complexity to your waffles and pancakes beyond what you would get from regular flour alone. The fermentation process gives the batter a tangy, slightly sour taste which pairs perfectly with sweet toppings like maple syrup or fruit compote.

Sourdough waffles and pancakes are also more nutritious than their conventional counterparts. The fermentation helps break down gluten proteins, making them easier for our bodies to digest. Plus, sourdough contains beneficial bacteria that can aid gut health.

In addition to being delicious and nutritious, making these items at home is cost-effective too! You’re using up excess sourdough starter instead of throwing it away; plus the ingredients are mostly pantry staples like flour and eggs.

If you don’t already have active sourdough starter on hand but want to try making these recipes, don’t worry! There are plenty of resources online where you can learn how to make your own starter from scratch using simple ingredients like flour and water.

Overall, if you’re looking for a way to use up excess sourdough starter while also adding some variety to your breakfast routine- look no further than homemade sourdough waffles or pancakes! They’re easy enough even for beginner bakers yet delicious enough even experienced cooks will love them.
