Air Layering: A Simple Way to Propagate Plants
If you’re a gardener or homesteader, you know that propagating plants can be a bit of a challenge. But did you know there is a simple technique called air layering that can help you create new plants from existing ones? Air layering is an easy and effective way to propagate trees, shrubs, and even houseplants.
What is Air Layering?
Air layering is the process of growing roots on a stem while it’s still attached to the parent plant. This method allows gardeners to produce new plants without having to take cuttings or separate them from the parent plant. It’s often used for hard-to-root woody plants like citrus, camellias, figs, magnolias, and azaleas.
How Does Air Layering Work?
To start air-layering your plant:
1. Choose the branch – Select a healthy branch with enough flexibility to bend down towards the soil.
2. Prepare the area – Clean an area around where you plan on making your cut by removing any leaves or other debris.
3. Cut – Make two parallel cuts around one-third of the way through the stem using clean pruning shears (be sure not to cut all the way through).
4. Apply rooting hormone – Dip in some rooting hormone powder onto this area so that it will encourage root growth quicker.
5. Wrap – Place moist sphagnum peat moss around this part of your branch and wrap plastic wrap tightly over it until it’s sealed shut.
6. Wait – Let your wrapped section hang loose for several weeks until roots grow into place (you may need to water and mist occasionally during this time)
7. Safely remove & transplant- Once roots have developed sufficiently within 4-8 weeks then safely remove your newly propagated plant by cutting below where wrapping was placed and replant in soil!

It also produces larger, more mature plants in a shorter amount of time than other propagation methods.
