Aquaponics and Hydroponics: Sustainable Solutions for Year-Round Food Production

Aquaponics and hydroponics systems are two popular methods of growing plants in a controlled environment. Both techniques have their unique advantages and disadvantages, but they share the same goal – to provide sustainable food production solutions for rural living and homesteading.
To better understand these systems, we spoke with experts in the field: Dr. Nick Savidov, senior research scientist at Lethbridge College’s Aquaculture Center of Excellence in Alberta, Canada; and Jeff Riedel, owner of Hydroponic Solutions based in Colorado.
Aquaponics is a system that combines aquaculture (fish farming) with hydroponics. The basic principle is to use fish waste as fertilizer for plants grown hydroponically. The water from the fish tank is pumped into plant beds where bacteria convert ammonia from fish waste into nitrites and then nitrates which are taken up by the plants as nutrients. In turn, the plants filter out waste products from the water before it returns to the fish tank for reuse.
According to Dr. Savidov, one of the benefits of aquaponics is its ability to recycle resources efficiently while producing both protein-rich fish and fresh vegetables without using synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
“With aquaponics, farmers can grow crops year-round regardless of weather conditions,” he said. “It also minimizes inputs such as water usage compared to traditional agriculture.”
Another advantage is that aquaponic systems can be scaled up or down depending on available space or desired production volume.
Hydroponics involves growing plants directly in nutrient-enriched water instead of soil. This technique allows for precise control over plant nutrition levels and eliminates many problems associated with traditional soil-based gardening such as pests or soil-borne diseases.
Jeff Riedel has been working with hydroponic systems since 1995 when he started his own business after years working in conventional agriculture.
“The biggest benefit I see with hydroponics is the ability to grow more food in less space compared to traditional agriculture,” he said. “This system also allows for faster crop growth, higher yields, and lower water usage.”
Hydroponic systems can be set up indoors or outdoors depending on available resources and desired production volume.
