Felling Trees Safely: How to Do It Without Any Accidents

Trees are an essential part of any rural landscape. They provide shade, shelter for animals, and can be used for firewood or to build structures. However, there comes a time when some trees need to be removed for safety reasons or to make way for new growth.

Removing a tree can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken. In this post, we’ll discuss how to safely fell a tree with an axe or chainsaw.

Before You Begin

The first step in felling a tree is to assess the situation and determine whether it’s safe to proceed. Look at the surrounding area and identify any potential hazards such as nearby buildings, power lines, or other trees that could interfere with your work.

It’s also important to check the weather forecast before you start. High winds can make it unsafe to fell a tree due to the risk of falling branches.

Once you’ve assessed the situation and determined that it’s safe to proceed, gather all necessary tools and equipment including:

– Chainsaw (if using)
– Axe
– Wedges
– Safety gear (including hard hat, eye protection, gloves)
– First aid kit

Preparing the Tree

Next, prepare the tree by cutting away any branches that could get in your way while felling it. Start at the top of the tree and work your way down towards its base.

If you’re using an axe instead of a chainsaw, you’ll need to create what’s called a hinge by cutting into one side of the trunk about halfway through its diameter. This will help guide where the tree falls once it starts coming down.

Felling The Tree

When felling a tree with either an axe or chainsaw , there are two main methods: notch-and-drop method or bore-cut method.

Notch-and-Drop Method:
1) Make an angled cut into one side of the trunk about waist height.
2) Make another angled cut on opposite side of the trunk, meeting the first cut to form a notch. This will create a hinge for the tree to fall.
3) Make a horizontal cut on the opposite side of the tree, slightly above your waist height and parallel to ground.
4) As soon as you hear cracking sound or see movement in tree quickly retreat along one escape route.

Bore-Cut Method:
1) Cut straight into the trunk at waist height, deep enough that saw reaches other side of trunk.
2) Angle your chainsaw down towards ground and make another cut close to initial one. The two cuts should meet at an angle forming a wedge shape in middle of trunk.
3) Move behind the tree and finish felling it by cutting through uncut portion from opposite direction.
4) As soon as you hear cracking sound or see movement in tree quickly retreat along one escape route.

After The Tree Has Fallen

Once the tree has fallen safely to the ground, don’t forget about its stump. You can either leave it alone or remove it completely using tools such as a stump grinder.

It’s also important to clear away any debris left over from felling process. Check for any damaged property or structures nearby that may have been hit during removal process.

Conclusion

Felling a tree with an axe or chainsaw can be dangerous but following safety precautions can help minimize risks involved with this task. Always assess situation before starting work, gather necessary tools and equipment, properly prepare tree by cutting branches not required , choose right method for removing based on type of tool used, retreat immediately once you hear cracking sound seen movement & clean up debris afterwards.

By following these steps carefully and taking appropriate safety measures throughout entire process, you’ll be able fell trees safely efficiently without worry about potential injuries accidents occurring during its removal!
