Energy-efficient Lighting: A Memoir of My Homesteading Journey
As a homesteader, I’ve always been conscious of my energy consumption. One way I’ve decided to minimize it is by using energy-efficient lighting. This decision has not only helped me save money on my electricity bills but also reduced my carbon footprint.
When I first started my homesteading journey, I used incandescent light bulbs as they were readily available and inexpensive. However, these bulbs consume a lot of energy and have a short lifespan. On the other hand, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are much more efficient than incandescent bulbs.
I decided to switch all the light fixtures in my house to LEDs because they have several advantages over CFLs and incandescent bulbs. Firstly, LED lights last much longer than traditional light bulbs; they can last up to 25 years! Secondly, they are more durable and less prone to breaking compared to CFLs. Thirdly, LED lights are highly efficient because they convert most of their energy into light rather than heat.
Another reason why I prefer LED lights is that they come in various shapes and sizes which makes them suitable for different fixtures around the house. For example, you can find small LED lights that fit under cabinets or larger ones that replace ceiling fixtures.
One thing you need to keep in mind when installing LED lights is their color temperature rating measured in Kelvin (K). The Kelvin rating determines whether your room will be brightly lit or have a warm glow effect similar to candlelight.
For instance:
– Warm white LEDs range from 2,700K – 3,000K giving off an amber-colored light.
– Natural white LEDs range from 4,000K – 5,000K providing bright illumination without being too harsh.
– Cool white LEDs range from 6,000K -7,000k giving off a bluish-white light.
It’s essential to choose the right Kelvin rating for each room in your home to create an ambiance that suits your needs.
Another energy-efficient lighting option is solar-powered lights. I use these lights outdoors, especially for my garden and pathway lighting. These lights are powered by photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity during the day. At night, they automatically turn on using stored energy from the sun.
The benefits of solar-powered lights are numerous; they reduce your electricity bills while also providing adequate illumination at night. They’re particularly convenient if you live in an area with frequent power outages as you won’t have to worry about being left in the dark.
