Upcycle Your Old Clothes and Linens into Beautiful Braided Rag Rugs!

Braiding Rag Rugs from Old Clothes and Linens
Rag rugs are a beautiful and practical addition to any home. They are durable, easy to clean, and can be made from a variety of materials, including old clothes and linens. Braiding rag rugs is an excellent way to upcycle these textiles while also creating something useful for your homestead.
Before you begin braiding your rug, gather the materials you will need. You will need fabric strips that are approximately 1-2 inches wide and long enough to braid into the desired size of your rug. You can use old t-shirts, sheets, curtains, jeans or any other fabric scraps you have on hand.
Once you have gathered your materials, it’s time to start braiding. To make a basic three-strand braid:
Step 1: Knot the ends of three fabric strips together.
Step 2: Hold one strip in each hand with the third strip in the middle.
Step 3: Cross the right strip over the middle strip so that it becomes the new middle strand.
Step 4: Cross the left strand over what is now in the middle.
Step 5: Repeat steps three and four until you reach the end of your strips.
When you run out of fabric on one strip before reaching your desired length, simply knot another strip onto its end and continue braiding as usual.
To create a rectangle-shaped rug instead of a circular one:
Step 1: Create two evenly sized braids using different fabrics or colors.
Step 2: Place one braid horizontally on top of another vertically so they cross at their centers.
Step 3: Connect their edges by sewing them together by hand or machine.
If you want to add more interest or complexity to your rug design:
Striped Rug:
Alternate different colored fabrics every few rows when braiding around.
Checkerboard Rug:
Create separate square-shaped sections by sewing braids together at their ends to form boxes. Then, braid the boxes together.
Rainbow Rug:
Create a rainbow effect by starting with red and gradually braiding in the other colors of the rainbow (orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet).
When your rug is complete:
Step 1: Trim any loose threads or uneven edges.
Step 2: Wash it in cold water to help set its shape.
Step 3: Hang it out to dry.
Tips for success:
– Use fabrics that are similar in weight; this will ensure an even-looking rug.
– Plan your design before you begin braiding so you can create a pattern that works well with your fabric choices.
– Don’t worry if your braid doesn’t look perfect! Slight irregularities add character and charm to rag rugs.
Braiding rag rugs from old clothes and linens is not only an excellent way to upcycle textiles but also creates something unique and beautiful for your home. It’s also a fun project that can be done alone or with friends or family members. So gather some old t-shirts, sheets or jeans and get started on creating a one-of-a-kind rug today!
