Next step involves preparing your scion wood pieces which requires selecting branches close in size to area being repaired on tree trunk/branch.

Select one-year-old growth that’s about ¼-inch in diameter; larger diameters may take too long to heal over completely.
Make smooth cuts at each end making sure they’re straight across.
The scion should be about two inches longer than the width of the wound. This will allow for an inch of overlap on each side, which gives the graft a better chance to take.

After these steps are complete use screws or nails that will hold your scion wood and bridge it across your wound site.
