Seeds that are impure can reduce germination rates, cause diseases in plants and lead to poor yields. Therefore, it is essential to clean your seeds before planting them. 1. Winnowing
Winnowing is an ancient method that farmers have been using for centuries to remove debris and chaff from grain and seed. It involves tossing seeds into the air while windy conditions blow away lighter materials such as dust, husks, and chaff.

To winnow seeds at home, pour them into a large bowl or bucket with high sides so they won’t spill over when tossed around. Stand outside on a windy day and toss the mix upwards in small batches while standing upwind of where it lands. The wind will carry off any unwanted material while leaving behind heavier grains or legumes.

2. Screening
Screening is another effective seed cleaning method that removes larger debris like leaves, stems or dirt particles from smaller-sized seeds like lettuce or spinach seeds.

To screen seeds at home, gather two fine-mesh screens of varying sizes placed one over the other in opposite directions with small holes facing down; then place both screens inside a container with higher sides than each screen’s height (e.g., plastic container). Pour dry seeded material onto this top screen layer and gently shake until all larger debris falls through lower holes.

3. Handpicking
Handpicking is ideal for removing any remaining impurities after winnowing and screening processes have removed most debris but still leave behind some foreign objects such as stones or twigs.

To handpick effectively, spread out cleaned seed batches on a flat surface under good light conditions so you can see what needs removing easily. Then slowly scan each batch looking for any foreign objects and remove them by hand.

4. Water flotation
Water flotation is a seed cleaning method that uses water to separate good seeds from bad ones based on their weight. It is ideal for removing small impurities like dust, dirt particles, or insect eggs.

To use water flotation on your farm, fill up a container with clean water and add your seeds slowly. Wait for the heavier seeds to sink while lighter debris floats to the surface where you can skim it off with a sieve or fine mesh strainer. Repeat this process until all unwanted material has been removed.

5. Magnetic Separation
Magnetic separation is an effective way of removing metallic impurities from seed batches such as iron filings or broken machinery parts that may have gotten mixed in during harvesting.

To use magnetic separation on your farm, pass the seed mix through a magnetic separator machine using strong magnets that attract metal impurities while leaving behind pure seeds.

6. Air-Screen Cleaner
Air-screen cleaners work by blowing air at high pressure through sieves of varying sizes, causing lighter debris to blow away while heavier grains remain behind.

To use an air-screen cleaner on your farm, pour cleaned seed batches into the hopper and switch on the machine’s blower fan which blows air through screens in different stages (coarsest first). The lighter materials will be blown out of each screen stage progressively until only pure grains are left behind in the last one.

7. Gravity Separator
Gravity separators rely on differences in density between materials to separate them effectively; they are perfect for larger-sized crops like beans or peas and can remove stones, sticks, damaged seeds quickly and efficiently without damaging good ones.

To use gravity separators at home:

a) Fill up a bucket with dry seeded material.
b) Pour this material slowly onto an inclined plane surface made of metal mesh so that heavier soils settle down faster than lighter debris.
c) As gravity does its job separating out heavier materials, you can skim off lighter debris at the top of the inclined plane.
