This process works by rearranging the molecular structure of the steel into a harder form.

Different types of steels will have different austenitizing temperatures depending on their composition. For example, low-carbon steels typically require lower temperatures than high-carbon steels. It’s important to know your specific type of steel before attempting to harden it.

The quenching method used also greatly affects the final hardness of the steel. Common quenching methods include water, oil, or air cooling. Water is generally considered the fastest cooling method but can cause excessive warping or cracking if not done correctly.

Once hardened, however, these highly stressed parts may crack or break under heavy loads – this is where tempering comes in.

What is Tempering?

Tempering follows hardening in order to reduce some of that hardness brought about by rapid cooling during hardening while increasing toughness at higher temperatures.

Tempering involves heating up previously hardened steel again (but at much lower temperatures compared with hardening), then letting it cool down slowly over time – usually inside an oven because slow-cooling produces less stress on metal compared with air-cooling which causes internal stresses.

During tempering heat treatment cycle, grains within hardened metal are allowed to move and crystals grow larger. This restores the metal’s ductility, or ability to bend without breaking, while also reducing internal stresses brought about by hardening.

The final hardness of tempered steel depends on the type of steel being used and the tempering temperature applied. For higher carbon steels, lower temperatures will result in a harder but more brittle material, whereas higher temperatures can produce a softer but tougher material.

How to Harden and Temper Steel

Step 1: Clean Your Steel

Step 2: Heat Your Steel

Using either an oven or forge (depending on size), heat your steel up until it reaches its austenitizing temperature. It is essential that you know your specific type of steel prior as each has unique requirements for optimal results.

Low-carbon steels typically require lower temperatures around 1480°F-1575°F (800°C-860°C), while high-carbon steels require higher temperatures between 1475°F-1550°F (800°C-840°C).

Step 3: Quench Your Steel

Once heated up correctly, quickly quench the piece of metal into water or oil depending on what method works best for you. If using water as cooling medium be cautious because rapid cooling brings about internal stresses which could cause warping or cracking if not controlled properly.

When quenching smaller pieces such as knives then water can be used since they cool down fast enough without causing damage but thicker stock materials should be cooled down using slow cooling methods such as oil or air which produce less internal stresses.

Step 4: Temper Your Steel

After hardening, the steel will be very hard and brittle. To restore some of its ductility and toughness, you’ll need to temper it by heating your piece of metal up again – this time at lower temperatures around 350°F-600°F (180°C-315°C) depending on what you desire in terms of final hardness.

The longer you keep your steel at these temperatures, the softer and tougher it will become. It’s best to use an oven for this process to ensure a controlled temperature range throughout the entire metal piece being treated.
