6 Effective Ways to Control Varroa Mites in Your Beehives

As a homesteader, beekeeping is one of the most rewarding activities that you can engage in. It’s not only an enjoyable pastime but also a source of honey for your family and agricultural pollination services. However, one of the biggest challenges that beekeepers face is Varroa mite infestation.

Varroa mites are external parasites that feed on the blood of adult bees and brood. They weaken the immune system of bees, reduce their lifespan, and cause significant damage to entire colonies. 1) Screen Bottom Board

One way to control Varroa mites is by using a screen bottom board. This type of bottom board allows dead mites and debris to fall through the screen onto a tray placed underneath it. The tray can then be easily removed and inspected for signs of Varroa infestation.

The screen bottom board also increases ventilation within the hive which helps to eliminate moisture buildup that can lead to other diseases such as chalkbrood or foulbrood.

2) Powdered Sugar Dusting

Another common method used in controlling Varroa mite populations involves dusting powdered sugar over frames containing broods during regular hive inspections. The sugar encourages grooming behavior among bees whereby they clean themselves off while dislodging any attached mites from their bodies without harming them.

The process should be carried out repeatedly at intervals as it does not kill all the mites at once but gradually reduces their numbers over time.

3) Drone Brood Removal

Varroa Mite females prefer drone cells because they have longer development periods than worker cells allowing more time for reproduction before emerging as adults from pupae cells after feeding on hemolymph (bee blood).

By removing drone brood frames every three weeks during active seasons (spring through summer), you interrupt their breeding cycle and decrease the population of mites in your hive.

4) Chemical Control

If a severe Varroa infestation is present within a colony, it may be necessary to use chemical treatments. Several chemicals are available for treating Varroa mites in beehives. However, most beekeepers prefer natural methods as some chemicals could harm bees or leave behind harmful residues.

One commonly used treatment method involves using oxalic acid drip or vaporization for killing adult mites during winter when brood production has stopped. The efficacy of these treatments depends on several factors like temperature and humidity levels within the hive.

5) Natural Oil Treatments

Some essential oils have been found to deter or kill Varroa Mites while not harming bees. Thymol crystals can be placed between frames for slow-release over time, while tea tree oil mixed with sugar syrup creates an effective varroacide spray that can be applied onto the comb surface directly.

Other natural oils include eucalyptus, lemongrass, and spearmint which can also be added into sugar syrup feeders or fogged around hives to repel mite populations.

6) Hygiene Practices

Lastly, hygiene plays a crucial role in controlling Varroa Mite populations within your hives. Regularly cleaning out dead bees from bottom boards and inspecting their bodies will alert you if there’s an infestation problem developing early on before it becomes too severe.

It’s also important to sanitize any equipment before introducing them into new colonies since they may harbor residual eggs or larvae that could infect other colonies. Use gloves when handling hives as this reduces the risk of transmitting diseases between different colonies via contaminated hands.
