In this system, water containing fish waste from the fish tanks is pumped into grow beds where it fertilizes the plants. The plants then absorb the nutrients from the water and purify it for reuse in the fish tanks. This cycle creates a self-sustaining ecosystem that reduces water usage by up to 90% compared to traditional farming methods.

4. Vertical Aquaponics: A vertical system uses tall towers or columns to pack more growing space into a smaller footprint.

5. Hybrid Systems: These combine two or more methods mentioned above to maximize production efficiency while minimizing resource use.

Best Plants for Aquaponics

Not all crops work well with aquaponics though some have been proven successful in an aquaponic environment including:

1) Lettuce – grows quickly & easily absorbs nutrients
2) Herbs such as basil & mint – they thrive in warm temperatures and produce abundant yields.
3) Radishes – quick-growing root vegetables that prefer cooler conditions
4) Strawberries – With proper irrigation & lighting conditions strawberries will flourish in an aquaponic setup
5) Tomatoes – Require lots of nutrients but yield big harvests when grown vertically using trellis systems.
6) Other leafy greens like kale, spinach, chard etc.

Fish Species Used in Aquaculture

The type of fish you can raise in an aquaponic system depends on your geographical location, climate, and regulations. However, some common species used in aquaculture are:

1) Tilapia – a fast-growing & hardy fish that is easy to maintain
2) Catfish – Often raised for its mild flavor
3) Trout – Grows well in cooler water & has a delicate taste.
4) Crayfish – For those interested in adding crustaceans to their operation
