Tom Selleck: Beyond the Mustache, A Man of Family and Rural Living

When you think of Tom Selleck, you may immediately picture his iconic mustache and his roles in popular TV shows like “Magnum P.I.” and “Blue Bloods.” But beyond his celebrity status, Selleck is a man who values family, hard work, and rural living.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Selleck was exposed to the outdoors at an early age. His father was an executive for a company that manufactured construction equipment, so the family often spent time camping and fishing. These experiences instilled in Selleck a love of nature that he carries with him to this day.

In fact, when he’s not acting or producing movies and TV shows (yes, he’s also a successful producer), Selleck can be found on his 65-acre ranch in Ventura County, California. He purchased the property back in 1987 as a place where he could escape from Hollywood and enjoy country living with his wife Jillie Mack (whom he married in 1987) and their daughter Hannah (born 1988).

Selleck has stated that owning a ranch is both challenging and rewarding. It requires hard work to maintain the land and animals but provides him with peace of mind knowing where his food comes from. He raises cattle on the ranch for beef production and also grows citrus trees.

Living on a ranch has given Selleck plenty of opportunities to practice self-sufficiency skills such as hunting deer for meat. In fact, during one interview with People magazine back in 1993, he noted that hunting had become more than just sport or recreation; it was now part of his lifestyle:

“I’m not into trophy hunting,” says Tom. “The only hunting I do is subsistence hunting—hunting because I need some meat.”

But it’s not all about working the land for Selleck; he also enjoys entertaining guests at home by cooking up meals with ingredients from his ranch. He has even published a cookbook called “Tom’s Kitchen” that features some of his favorite recipes.

Another aspect of rural living that Selleck values is community. He has been involved in various local organizations such as the Ventura County Sheriff’s Foundation and the Cal Poly Foundation, which supports education programs at California Polytechnic State University. He also serves on the board of directors for the National Rifle Association (NRA), an organization dedicated to protecting Second Amendment rights.

Despite his busy schedule, Selleck always makes time for family. In fact, he has spoken about how important it is to him to be a present father and husband:

“I’m just Dad,” he says. “I’m not Tom Selleck or Magnum P.I.—at least I hope not.”

Selleck credits his wife Jillie with keeping him grounded and helping him maintain balance between work and home life. She often accompanies him on trips and sets up their RV while he works on set.

In addition to being committed to family life, Selleck is passionate about giving back to those in need through charitable causes such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Even though he could easily live a luxurious lifestyle in Hollywood, Tom Selleck chooses instead to live simply on his ranch where he can enjoy nature, practice self-sufficiency skills, entertain guests with meals made from fresh ingredients grown on site, support local communities through charitable efforts all while being a devoted husband and father.

It’s clear that Tom Selleck values hard work, independence, family and community; these ideals are reflected in both his personal life as well as his professional accomplishments over the years.
