Chip Budding: A Historical Technique for Propagating Plants

Chip budding, also known as patch budding, is an ancient horticultural technique that has been used for centuries. It involves grafting a small bud from one plant onto the rootstock of another. This method is commonly used to propagate fruit trees and ornamental plants.

In this process, the budwood should be collected when it’s matured but still dormant. The bark on the rootstock should be sliced away in a T-shape, exposing the cambium layer beneath. Then a small chip containing a bud from the desired cultivar is inserted into this cut to allow it to fuse with the cambium layer of the stock plant.

One benefit of using chip budding over other propagation methods (such as seedling or cutting) is that it allows growers to produce plants that are true-to-type – meaning they will have identical characteristics as their parent plant. Additionally, chip budding can be done relatively quickly compared to some other forms of grafting.

Historically, Chip buddying was widely practiced throughout Europe during the 16th century and later made its way across seas in North America by colonists who propagated European grape varieties using this method. Today, many commercial nurseries still use this technique for propagating fruit trees such as apples and pears.

The first step in practicing chip budding requires selecting high-quality donor material that has proven desirable traits like higher yield or pest resistance. Once you’ve acquired suitable budwood material from these plants through pruning techniques like ‘scouting’ or ‘bud-sticking’, it’s time to prepare your rootstock trees.

Rootstocks are selected based on their ability to provide certain qualities needed for specific cultivars including disease resistance or tolerance against environmental factors like droughts and poor soil quality.

Then begins with making cuts on both rootstock and scion wood which must match precisely so that they fit together perfectly when grafted together later on. The cuts should be made at a 45-degree angle to maximize surface area for the bud and cambium layer to fuse together.

After making the cuts, it’s time to graft the buds onto the rootstock. This requires carefully placing the bud chip into the T-shaped cut of bark on the rootstock tree and then wrapping it tightly with grafting tape or Parafilm.

It’s important to keep newly grafted plants well-watered and protected from harsh weather conditions for several weeks after grafting in order to ensure their survival. If done correctly, chip budding can result in strong, vigorous plants that are identical to their parent plant- a valuable asset for homesteaders looking to grow quality fruits or ornamental plants.
