Troubleshooting Common Issues in Humanure Composting Systems

Composting human waste, also known as humanure composting, is an excellent way to turn organic material into nutrient-rich soil for your garden. However, like any other composting system, it can encounter problems that may hinder its effectiveness. In this article, we will explore some common issues in humanure composting systems and provide troubleshooting tips to help you overcome them.

1. Foul Odors:
One of the most common issues in a humanure composting system is the presence of foul odors. This can be caused by improper balance of carbon and nitrogen materials or inadequate aeration within the pile.

To troubleshoot this problem, ensure that you maintain a proper carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C:N) of about 30:1 to 40:1. Add more high-carbon materials such as dry leaves or sawdust if your pile smells too strong. Additionally, make sure the pile is well-aerated by turning it regularly or using a compost aerator tool to improve airflow.

2. Excessive Moisture:
If your humanure compost pile becomes excessively wet and starts emitting a rotten smell, it indicates poor drainage or added liquids with high moisture content like kitchen scraps or urine.

To address this issue, add more absorbent materials like hay or straw to increase porosity and improve drainage within the pile. Avoid adding excessive liquid waste; instead, collect urine separately for use as fertilizer diluted with water.

3. Slow Decomposition:
If you notice that your humanure compost is taking much longer than usual to decompose into usable humus-like material, several factors could be at play:

a) Lack of Microorganisms: Introduce beneficial microorganisms by adding finished compost from other sources or commercial microbial inoculants specifically designed for composting toilets.

b) Low Temperatures: Ensure that your pile reaches optimal temperatures between 110-140°F (43-60°C) to encourage the breakdown of organic matter. Use a compost thermometer to monitor the temperature and make adjustments if necessary, such as adding more nitrogen-rich materials or covering the pile for insulation.

c) Insufficient Aeration: Poor airflow can slow down decomposition. Regularly turn your compost pile using a pitchfork or compost turning tool to ensure that oxygen reaches all parts of the pile.

4. Pest Infestation:
Pests like flies, rodents, or maggots in your humanure compost can be quite unpleasant and may indicate an imbalance in your system.

To deter pests, cover your compost pile with a layer of straw or leaves to create a barrier. Avoid adding any animal products like meat scraps that could attract unwanted visitors. Additionally, consider using rodent-proof bins or wire mesh around your composting area to prevent access.

5. Pathogen Concerns:
While properly managed humanure composting systems are generally safe and effective at destroying pathogens, it’s essential to address any concerns regarding potential contamination thoroughly.

Ensure proper thermophilic decomposition by maintaining adequate temperatures within the pile for an extended period (at least one year). This process helps eliminate harmful bacteria and parasites effectively. It’s also recommended to avoid using fresh humanure directly on edible crops; instead, apply it only on non-edible plants or incorporate it into soil well before planting food crops.

By troubleshooting these common issues in humanure composting systems promptly and implementing appropriate solutions, you can maintain an efficient and odor-free system while producing nutrient-rich soil amendment for your garden. Remember always to follow local regulations and guidelines when dealing with human waste management systems.
