Teething Troubles: Can it Cause Coughing in Babies?

Teething is a significant milestone in a baby’s life, but it can also be a challenging time for both the child and their parents. As those tiny teeth begin to emerge from the gums, babies often experience discomfort and pain. This discomfort can manifest in various ways, including respiratory ailments such as coughing.

The connection between teething and respiratory issues may not be immediately apparent, but many parents have reported an increase in coughing episodes during their baby’s teething phase. While there isn’t scientific evidence directly linking teething to respiratory problems like coughs, experts believe that the two might be indirectly related.

During the teething process, babies tend to drool excessively. The excess saliva can trickle down into their throats and irritate the airways, leading to a persistent cough. Additionally, babies often put objects—including their hands—into their mouths while teething. These objects may carry germs or dust particles that can trigger respiratory symptoms such as coughing or sneezing.

It’s important for parents to differentiate between a teething-related cough and an actual illness. Teething-associated coughs are usually mild and intermittent compared to those caused by infections like colds or allergies. They typically resolve on their own without any medical intervention.

To help alleviate your baby’s discomfort during this time, there are several things you can try at home:

1. Provide gentle relief: Offer your little one something safe and appropriate to chew on—a chilled rubber teether or a clean cloth dampened with cool water can help soothe sore gums and reduce excessive drooling.

2. Maintain good oral hygiene: Keep your baby’s mouth clean by gently wiping their gums with a soft cloth after feeding sessions or before bedtimes.

3. Use natural remedies cautiously: Some parents find that natural remedies like chamomile tea or clove oil provide relief when applied topically (in small quantities) on the affected area of the gums; however, it’s crucial to consult with your pediatrician before trying any alternative remedies.

4. Keep the air clean: Ensure proper ventilation in your home and avoid exposing your baby to smoke or strong chemical odors that could irritate their respiratory system.

If your baby’s cough persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as a high fever or difficulty breathing, it is essential to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can evaluate the situation and determine if there is an underlying cause for the cough unrelated to teething.

Remember, every child is unique, and their teething experiences may vary. While some babies may experience respiratory symptoms during this phase, others might not have any such issues at all. With patience, love, and appropriate care, you can help ease your little one through this developmental milestone while ensuring their overall health and well-being.
