T-budding: A Simple and Effective Technique for Propagating Plants

T-budding, also known as shield budding, is a method of asexual reproduction wherein a bud from one plant is attached onto another plant. It involves creating a “T” shaped cut on the host plant’s bark and inserting a bud taken from the donor plant into the incision. The bud then fuses with the host’s vascular tissue, eventually growing into a new shoot.

The T-Budding Process:

It is important to note that different plants have specific timing requirements, so it’s essential to research and follow proper guidelines for each species.

2. Preparing the Budwood: Choose healthy, disease-free shoots from the donor plant as bud sources. Select buds that are plump, well-developed, and located near leaf axils for optimal growth potential.

3. Preparing the Rootstock: Identify a suitable rootstock with similar growth characteristics as the desired scion variety. The rootstock should be actively growing and free from diseases or pests. Use a sterilized knife or budding tool to make a horizontal cut across the stem about 4-6 inches above ground level.

4. Making an Incision: On the rootstock stem just below where you made your initial horizontal cut, create a vertical cut roughly 1 inch long forming a “T” shape with the first cut being perpendicular to it.

5. Inserting the Bud: Carefully lift one side of the bark on the rootstock using gentle pressure from your thumb without breaking it away completely (this is called “lifting”). Slide your knife under one bud scale on your prepared budstick until you feel resistance – this indicates that you’ve reached living tissue beneath.

6. Cutting off Budstick: Using sharp pruning shears or a grafting knife, remove excess wood around and behind bud leaving only about half an inch of wood attached below bud shield (this protruding portion will help secure it in place during grafting).

7. Insertion of Bud Shield: Gently insert the bud shield into the T-shaped incision on the rootstock, ensuring that it fits snugly and is aligned with the cambium layers (the thin layer just beneath bark responsible for nutrient transport). Press down firmly to make good contact between the bud and stock.

8. Securing the Bud: To keep moisture levels intact and prevent desiccation, tie a rubber budding strip or grafting tape around the base of the bud, leaving only the top exposed.

9. Post-Graft Care: Once all buds have been inserted and secured, protect them from drying out by applying a layer of grafting wax or a similar protective compound over each bud. This will help retain moisture while also preventing infection.

10. Monitor and Wait: Keep an eye on your newly grafted plants regularly to ensure they are developing properly. After a few weeks, if you notice signs of growth such as new leaves emerging from buds or swelling at union sites, it indicates successful grafting.
