7 Tips for Properly Storing Raw Milk: Freshness and Safety Guaranteed

Raw milk is a nutritious and delicious drink that many people enjoy. However, it’s important to store raw milk properly to ensure its freshness and safety. Whether you have your own cows or purchase raw milk from a local farmer, here are some tips on how to store raw milk correctly.

1. Start with clean containers: Before storing raw milk, make sure the containers you use are clean and sterilized. This will help prevent any bacteria or contaminants from spoiling the milk. Glass bottles with tight-fitting lids are ideal for storing raw milk as they do not leach any harmful chemicals into the liquid.

2. Keep it cold: Raw milk should always be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature below 40°F (4°C). It’s crucial to maintain a consistently low temperature to slow down bacterial growth and keep the milk fresh for longer periods.

3. Avoid light exposure: Light can cause essential nutrients in raw milk, such as vitamins A and D, to degrade over time. To protect these delicate nutrients, store your raw milk in opaque containers or wrap them in foil or brown paper bags before placing them in the refrigerator.

4. Use FIFO method: FIFO stands for “first in, first out.” When storing multiple containers of raw milk, arrange them according to their expiration dates so that you consume the oldest ones first. This practice helps prevent wastage by ensuring that no container stays unused for too long.

5. Don’t shake vigorously: Raw cow’s milk naturally separates into cream and skim layers due to its fat content. While commercial dairy products are homogenized to prevent separation, this process is unnecessary for small-scale production or home use of raw milk as long as proper storage techniques are followed carefully.
To mix any separated cream back into the rest of the liquid without damaging its structure:
– Gently swirl the container instead of shaking it vigorously.
– If desired, scoop off some cream using a spoon before pouring the milk and then recombine the two parts by stirring gently.

6. Freeze for long-term storage: If you have excess raw milk that you won’t be able to consume before it expires, freezing is an excellent option. However, keep in mind that freezing can affect both the taste and texture of raw milk.
– Pour the milk into freezer-safe containers, leaving some headspace as liquids expand when frozen.
– Thaw frozen raw milk slowly in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature to prevent bacterial growth.

7. Keep track of freshness: Raw milk typically stays fresh for about 5-7 days if stored properly in a refrigerator. To ensure its freshness, always smell and visually inspect the milk before consuming it. Any off smells or unusual textures indicate spoilage and should be discarded immediately.

By following these guidelines, you can store your raw milk safely while preserving its nutritional value and taste. Enjoy this wholesome beverage knowing that you have taken all necessary precautions to maintain its quality from farm to fridge!
