Composting Techniques for Small-Scale Homesteading

If you’re a small-scale homesteader looking to improve your soil health and reduce waste, composting is an essential technique that you should consider. Composting allows you to recycle organic materials such as food scraps, yard trimmings, and manure into nutrient-rich compost that can be used as a natural fertilizer for your garden. In this article, we will explore different composting techniques suitable for small-scale homesteads.

1. Backyard Composting:

Backyard composting is the most common method used by small-scale homesteaders. It requires minimal equipment and can be easily integrated into your daily routine.

a) Select a Location: Choose a convenient spot in your backyard that receives partial sunlight. Avoid placing the bin too close to trees or structures to ensure proper air circulation.

b) Build or Buy a Bin: You have several options when it comes to choosing a bin. Wooden bins are aesthetically pleasing but require carpentry skills. Plastic bins are affordable and easy to maintain, while wire mesh bins offer excellent airflow but may not retain heat as well.

c) Layer Organic Materials: Start by layering brown (carbon-rich) and green (nitrogen-rich) materials in equal proportions. Brown materials include dry leaves, straw, shredded paper, and wood chips. Green materials consist of fruit/vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings, and fresh plant trimmings.

d) Moisten the Pile: Ensure the pile remains moist like a wrung-out sponge by adding water regularly during dry periods. Excessive moisture slows down decomposition while insufficient moisture hinders microbial activity.

e) Turn the Pile: Every few weeks or whenever you add new material, use a pitchfork or shovel to turn the pile from outside towards the center. This helps aerate the compost heap and speeds up decomposition.

f) Monitor Temperature: Composting generates heat due to microbial activity. Aim for a temperature range of 120-150°F (49-66°C), as this kills weed seeds, harmful pathogens, and insect eggs.

g) Harvest the Compost: After several months, your compost will turn dark brown with an earthy smell. It should resemble crumbly soil. Remove any large undecomposed materials and use the finished compost in your garden beds or mix it into potting soil for container gardening.

2. Vermicomposting:

Vermicomposting utilizes worms to break down organic waste quickly and efficiently. This method is ideal for small-scale homesteaders with limited space or those living in urban areas.

a) Choose a Bin: Select a shallow bin made of wood or plastic with a lid to keep pests out. Consider adding multiple bins if you generate substantial amounts of organic waste regularly.

b) Create Bedding: Line the bottom of the bin with moistened shredded newspaper, cardboard, or coconut coir as bedding material for the worms.

c) Add Redworms: Purchase redworms (Eisenia fetida) from a reputable source such as a local nursery or online supplier. Start with about one pound (450 grams) per square foot of surface area.

d) Feed Your Worms: Introduce kitchen scraps like fruit/vegetable peels, coffee grounds/filters, tea bags, and crushed eggshells into the bin regularly. Avoid meat, dairy products, oily foods, and citrus fruits as they can attract pests or harm the worms.

e) Maintain Moisture Level: Keep the bedding moist but not waterlogged by occasionally misting it with water using a spray bottle.

f) Harvest Vermicast: When most of the bedding has been converted into dark castings rich in beneficial microbes and nutrients within three to six months depending on conditions), it’s time to harvest vermicast manually using techniques such as the “light method” or “migration method.” Return the worms to their bin with fresh bedding to continue the process.

3. Bokashi Composting:

Bokashi composting is an anaerobic fermentation process that allows you to compost a wide range of food waste, including meat and dairy products, that are typically restricted in other methods.

a) Obtain a Bokashi Bucket: Purchase a specially designed bucket with an airtight lid and drainage spigot. Some buckets come with bran inoculated with beneficial microorganisms known as Effective Microorganisms (EM).

b) Layer Food Waste: Place your food scraps into the bucket, adding a layer of EM bran after each addition. Press down on each layer to remove air pockets.

c) Drain Liquid: As fermentation occurs, liquid called “Bokashi tea” is produced. Open the spigot periodically to drain this liquid which can be diluted and used as liquid fertilizer for plants.

d) Fermentation Period: Once full, seal the bucket tightly and let it ferment for about two weeks in a cool location away from direct sunlight.

e) Bury or Compost: Dig trenches or holes in your garden beds or designated composting area and bury the fermented food waste beneath at least eight inches (20 cm) of soil. Alternatively, add it to your regular backyard compost pile where further decomposition will occur.

f) Wait for Maturation: The buried waste requires additional time to complete decomposition before being ready for use in your garden. Allow three to six months before planting directly above it.

By implementing these composting techniques on your small-scale homestead, you can reduce waste going into landfills while simultaneously improving soil fertility naturally. Experiment with different methods or even combine them based on your needs and available resources. Start small, be patient, and soon you’ll reap the benefits of nutrient-rich homemade compost that will nourish your crops year after year.
