With over 80% of the world’s almond supply grown there, beekeepers from around the country bring their colonies to these orchards for massive-scale pollination events.

However, beekeeping faces several challenges today. Colony collapse disorder (CCD), thought to be caused by a combination of factors such as pesticide exposure, habitat loss, pests like Varroa mites, and diseases like American foulbrood or Nosema ceranae have significantly impacted honeybee populations worldwide.

To combat these issues and promote sustainable beekeeping practices, individuals and organizations have undertaken initiatives such as promoting native plant species that attract pollinators and reducing pesticide use near hives. Additionally, urban beekeeping has gained popularity in recent years as more people recognize its importance within city environments.

Beekeeping associations and educational programs have also played a pivotal role in supporting both novice and experienced beekeepers alike. These resources provide valuable information on hive management techniques while advocating for responsible stewardship practices that prioritize honeybee health and overall biodiversity conservation.

As we look towards the future of beekeeping for pollination and honey production, it is essential to emphasize the importance of sustainable practices. Protecting pollinators and their habitats, reducing pesticide use, and supporting local beekeepers are crucial steps in ensuring the continued existence of these vital insects.
