Another well-known example is beans. These legumes have fascinating adaptations that promote self-fertilization. The anthers (male reproductive organs) in bean flowers typically surround the stigma (female reproductive organ), forming what’s called a “keel.” Bees visiting bean flowers often trigger vibrations while collecting nectar, causing pollen to be released onto their bodies. When those bees visit another bean flower, some of that pollen will rub off on its own keel during their probing actions before reaching maturity.

The fermentation process helps break down any gel-like substances surrounding the seeds and kills potential pathogens present in the pulp. After fermentation is complete (indicated by a layer of mold forming on top), rinse off all debris from the seeds and then lay them out on paper towels or screens to dry thoroughly before storage.

Beans require a slightly different approach due to their hard pods protecting their precious cargo –the seeds! Once bean pods have dried completely on the plant but haven’t burst open yet, harvest them carefully and allow further drying indoors until they become brittle enough to shatter easily when squeezed gently between your fingers. Next, remove each pod manually or by stomping on them gently (while wearing shoes) inside a bag – be prepared for an explosion of beans!

After collecting and drying your seeds, proper storage is crucial to maintain their viability. Keep them in a cool, dark, and dry place – airtight containers like glass jars or seed envelopes work well. Be sure to label each container with the plant name, variety, and year of collection.
