It’s recommended to bury food waste beneath the surface of your worm bin rather than leaving it exposed on top. This minimizes odor issues and prevents flies from laying eggs on decaying matter.

To maintain a healthy worm population and effective vermicomposting system:

1. Regularly monitor moisture levels: The bedding should feel moist but not soggy; add water if necessary.
2. Provide proper ventilation: Drill small holes along with the sides of your bin to allow for air circulation.
3. Avoid overfeeding: Excess food can lead to foul odors and pest problems.
4. Harvest compost periodically: After three to six months, sift out the finished compost, leaving the worms and undigested material behind. Use this nutrient-rich vermicompost in your garden or potted plants.
